En 1997, un autre suivi s’est déroulé du 1er au 8 mai, réalisé conjointement par l’ARVAM, l’IFREMER, OCEA et l’Université de la Réunion, afin de compléter la description des peuplements et de comparer les données obtenues (Tessier et al., 1997). En 1999, dans le cadre du programme CORDIO sur le blanchissement corallien et ses impacts écologiques et socio-économiques, des stations de surveillance ont été implantées et sont parties intégrantes de l’ORC. L’objectif principal est d’informer sur les flux économiques qui sont  produits  chaque  année  par  ces  écosystèmes  et  sur l’importance  de  les  prendre  en  compte  dans  les  politiques et budgets de gestion de l’environnement.  Il a été évalué que les RCEA produisent chaque année un total de 28 M€, avec une estimation minimum de  19 M€ et un maximum de 37 M€.  Au  total, ce sont environ 600 sociétés, 900 emplois et plus de 50 000 personnes  qui  dépendent  à  différents  degrés  des  services  écosystémiques  des  récifs  coralliens  et écosystèmes associés de Mayotte. \r\nPrès  de  15M€  sont  visibles  en  termes  de  flux  financiers  annuels  pour  l’économie  de  Mayotte  (via  les valeurs  ajoutées  des  services  du  tourisme  et  de  la  pêche  liés  aux  RCEA)  tandis  que  d’autres  services, comme  la  protection  contre  les  inondations  côtières  et  la  séquestration  du  carbone,  ne  sont  pas comptabilisés dans les statistiques économiques.   \r\nLes  principaux  services  en  termes  économiques  sont  la  protection  contre  les  inondations  côtières  (11M€/an),  la  production  de  biomasse  (commerciale  et  d’autoconsommation  pour  9M€/an)  suivi  du service  d’attributs  pour  le  tourisme  « bleu » (6  M€/an).
