Elle souhaitait également impliquer fortement les équipes des différentes réserves naturelles marines dans la phase de collecte des données sur le terrain.\r\nDe 2008 à 2012, le « réseau de réserves » a été pérennisé afin, d’une part de réaliser un diagnostic actualisé sur l’état de santé des peuplements benthiques et des herbiers à partir de 2008, et d’autre part de renforcer le principe de compagnonnage et d’échange entre les 4 structures. Depuis 2009, le suivi est complété par un diagnostique de l’état des peuplements ichtyologiques et par le suivi de stations de comparaison hors réserve. Reef Check vise plusieurs objectifs :\r\n- Eduquer le public sur les menaces qui pèsent sur les récifs ; \r\n- Créer un réseau mondial de volontaires qui surveillent et récoltent des données sur l’état des récifs ; \r\n- Etudier au niveau scientifique les différents processus qui interviennent dans les récifs coralliens ; \r\n- Encourager la collaboration entre les différents gestionnaires de l’environnement marin (gouvernements, ONG, secteur privé...) ; \r\n- Stimuler les actions locales pour protéger ou réhabiliter les écosystèmes récifaux, avec des solutions durables. Elle  a  été  préparée  par  l’Agence  française  de \r\nDéveloppement  (AFD)  dans  un  cadre  interministériel \r\ndès 2002, rejointe ensuite par plusieurs partenaires. Les \r\nobjectifs de l’initiative visaient :\r\n•\t l’amélioration de la connaissance de la biodiversité, \r\nde  l’état  et  du  fonctionnement  des  écosystèmes \r\ncoralliens ;\r\n•\t la  réalisation  d’opérations  de  protection  et  de \r\ngestion des écosystèmes coralliens  à une échelle \r\nsignificative ;\r\n•\t la valorisation du potentiel économique reposant \r\nsur  les  valeurs  d’usage  et  la  biodiversité  des \r\nécosystèmes coralliens ;\r\n•\t la  diffusion  de  l’information  et  des  savoirs,  le \r\nrenforcement  des  capacités  et  l’animation  des \r\nréseaux locaux, nationaux et internationaux. \r\nLe programme s’est déroulé pendant 6 ans, de 2005 \r\nà 2010, sur plus de 17 pays impliqués à divers degrés, \r\nengageant  de  nombreux  partenaires  politiques, \r\nfinanciers et techniques.
