Il a donc été proposé de confier à l’IRD la tâche d’identifier des sites de suivi représentatifs de la très grande diversité des récifs coralliens de Nouvelle-Calédonie. Cette expertise s’appuie sur un jeu d’images satellitaires couvrant l’ensemble des récifs de la Nouvelle-Calédonie. Les sites comprendront trois types de milieux naturels : des zones coralliennes (appelés parfois par la suite « sites corail »), des herbiers et des mangroves. Les sites couvriront l’ensemble des zones proposées à l’inscription au patrimoine mondial.\r\nCe rapport s’articule en trois parties.
