En 2004, la Direction de l’agriculture, de la forêt et de la pêche (DAF) a lancé un projet d’évaluation environnementale de 6 zones remarquables au sein du lagon de Mayotte (voir carte). Ces 6 zones ont été sélectionnées pour leur valeur écologique dans le cadre du Plan de Gestion du Lagon de Mayotte (PGLM, 2001). Ils couvrent au total 12 000 ha., ce qui représente environ 10% du lagon.\r\nLe groupe ARVAM-PARETO est spécialisé dans  la gestion des récifs coralliens et des zones côtières dans l’Océan Indien. Il est un produit du projet Millennium Coral Reef Mapping initié en 2001 à l’Institute for Marine Remote Sensing de University of South Florida (IMaRS/USF) aux Etats-Unis et qui se poursuit depuis 2004 à l’Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD) à Nouméa. \r\nCe projet initialement financé par la National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Oceanography Program, vise à caractériser et à cartographier la totalité des récifs de la planète à partir d’un jeu de données et de méthodes homogènes (images satellitaires de type Landsat, à 30 mètres de résolution) suivant un schéma de classification géographiquement invariant.
