En effet, la barrière récifale d'un linéaire de 1600 km est la plus longue barrière continue et la deuxième plus grande barrière au monde après la Grande Barrière de Corail située dans les eaux australiennes. Par ailleurs, ses biotopes et ses paysages diversifiés de même que sa biodiversité remarquable permettent de le définir comme étant le "plus beau lagon du monde". Pour exemple, Laboute et Richer de Forges (2004) font état d'une ichtyofaune riche de 1659 espèces lagonaires dont 1100 dans le lagon Sud-Ouest, de plus de 5000 espèces de mollusques et plus de 4000 de crustacés (Laboute et Grandperrin, 2004). L'endémisme est une deuxième caractéristique importante de la diversité marine calédonienne avec un taux qui atteint 5% pour les poissons marins et 10 à 15% pour les coraux (IFRECOR, 2008).
