A la Réunion les récifs coralliens n’occupent que 12% du linéaire côtier total, mais leur importance pour l’activité économique de l’île et pour le bien être de ses habitants est sans commune mesure avec leur taille. Ce littoral récifal concentre en effet la quasi-totalité de l’activité balnéaire de l’île (La totalité des plages où la baignade est possible et autorisée, 70 % de la capacité d’accueil hôtelière). Comparé aux autres littoraux de l’île, la diversité des usages pratiqués par kilomètre de linéaire côtier est nettement supérieure. A l’évidence les récifs sont une interface qui attire et polarise les activités humaines. Cette fonction de polarisation vaut également pour les espèces marines qui utilisent le récif comme une nourricerie et comme un garde manger. Hormis cette fonction de polarisation, les récifs coralliens exercent également une fonction de filtre et une fonction d’enrichissement.\r\nLa première est de nature purement physique. Les récifs brisent l’énergie des vagues et de la houle évitant ainsi une érosion trop importante du littoral sédimentaire et autorisant des activités économiques dans la plaine littorale adjacente à la ligne de rivage.\r\nComme la polarisation, la fonction d’enrichissement présente une dimension écologique et anthropique. Les récifs enrichissent, en effet, le milieu océanique en flux larvaires et le milieu terrestre en produits de la pêche, et en flux d’images. 1. Réaliser un inventaire des principales espèces-cibles de la pêcherie artisanale locale observées dans chacun des sites, avec élaboration de listes d’espèces zonées ; 
2. Apprécier pour chacun des sites et pour l’ensemble du projet, la structuration de cette catégorie de poissons, selon plusieurs caractéristiques : \r\n- la diversité taxonomique (principales familles et espèces) ; \r\n- l’abondance de chaque famille et espèce de ces poissons, en terme de 
nombre d’individus et de biomasse ; \r\n- la structure trophique de ces communautés de poissons, en terme de nombre d’individus et de biomasse. 
3. Etablir, sur le site de N’Gouja, nouvellement identifié au sein du projet de classement en réserve naturelle, un inventaire de l’ensemble des espèces de poissons récifaux observées. Il s’agit d’un secteur fondamental pour l’île dans la mesure où l’anse constitue le seul site naturel permettant une approche aisée et un accostage aux bateaux d’une certaine taille. Le but est de concevoir un aménagement intégré de la zone qui puisse associer la réalisation d’un abri portuaire (de type petite marina permettant un abri et un accostage facilité aux petites embarcations de pêche ou de plaisance fréquentant le site) et la conception d’un programme de confortation du rivage, puisque des traces d’une érosion assez significative peuvent être observées à proximité immédiate du wharf et au pied des habitations bordant la côte. Second objectif du programme ciblé sur l’île de Futuna pour l’année 2005, une expertise sera réalisée par le LGPMC de l’UNC sur le secteur littoral de Vele. Cette zone doit faire l’objet d’aménagements littoraux significatifs liés au programme d’extension de la piste de l’aéroport. L’expertise conseil à réaliser caractérisera les tendances géomorphologiques évolutives et hydrodynamiques du littoral. Elle aura pour finalité d’apporter une aide technique au Territoire des Îles Wallis et Futuna et à ses services techniques en matière de génie civil côtier et d’aide à la décision.
