Reef Check se veut un programme volontaire de surveillance de l’état de santé des récifs, s’appuyant sur une démarche scientifique rigoureuse mais adaptée aux capacités des intervenants. Qu’ils soient issus du milieu scientifique, des ONGs ou plus largement d’un public averti, quiconque peut participer à Reef Check.\r\nReef Check et Quiksilver, dans le cadre de l’opération « The Crossing », ont permis à des équipes de plongeurs/surfeurs d’explorer certains de ces récifs éloignés comme ce fut le cas pour l’île d’Europa en avril 2002. C’est à cette occasion que l’ARVAM entreprit de créer Reef Check Réunion. Le partenariat avec Quiksilver Foundation fut formalisé en 2003. Il a pour but la conduite d’un programme relatif à l’état de santé des récifs coralliens des spots de surf de la Réunion, en adéquation avec l’initiative internationale Reef Check du Programme des Nations Unies pour l’Environnement (PNUE).\r\nDepuis 2009, Reef Check Réunion est soutenu par la commune de Saint Paul qui a souhaité développé un réseau de suivi des récifs coralliens bordant les plages classées Pavillon Bleu.
