Les \r\nobjectifs de l’initiative visaient :\r\n•\t l’amélioration de la connaissance de la biodiversité, \r\nde  l’état  et  du  fonctionnement  des  écosystèmes \r\ncoralliens ;\r\n•\t la  réalisation  d’opérations  de  protection  et  de \r\ngestion des écosystèmes coralliens  à une échelle \r\nsignificative ;\r\n•\t la valorisation du potentiel économique reposant \r\nsur  les  valeurs  d’usage  et  la  biodiversité  des \r\nécosystèmes coralliens ;\r\n•\t la  diffusion  de  l’information  et  des  savoirs,  le \r\nrenforcement  des  capacités  et  l’animation  des \r\nréseaux locaux, nationaux et internationaux. \r\nLe programme s’est déroulé pendant 6 ans, de 2005 \r\nà 2010, sur plus de 17 pays impliqués à divers degrés, \r\nengageant  de  nombreux  partenaires  politiques, \r\nfinanciers et techniques.
