Celui-ci a été réalisé sur deux périodes consécutives (mai 2002/ août 2003 et septembre 2003/mai 2004) et les résultats obtenus montrent que la Nouvelle-Calédonie est non seulement un site ayant un important rôle à jouer en termes de conservation de ces espèces (en voie de disparition) mais également un des rares endroits du monde où leur pêche est encore autorisée. En 1999, dans le cadre du programme CORDIO sur le blanchissement corallien et ses impacts écologiques et socio-économiques, des stations de surveillance ont été implantées et sont parties intégrantes de l’ORC.
