Il est un produit du projet Millennium Coral Reef Mapping initié en 2001 à l’Institute for Marine Remote Sensing de University of South Florida (IMaRS/USF) aux Etats-Unis et qui se poursuit depuis 2004 à l’Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD) à Nouméa. \r\nCe projet initialement financé par la National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Oceanography Program, vise à caractériser et à cartographier la totalité des récifs de la planète à partir d’un jeu de données et de méthodes homogènes (images satellitaires de type Landsat, à 30 mètres de résolution) suivant un schéma de classification géographiquement invariant.
