Les restrictions sur la fréquentation ont un intérêt limité pour prédire les impacts sociaux ou environnementaux. Cela résulte d’une part de leur large et intense usage dans l’agriculture, plus particulièrement des insecticides, dans les zones tropicales. Le ruissellement et le cycle de l’eau contribuent de façon majeure à cette pollution. D’une part, les fleuves ou les rivières côtières introduisent dans les eaux marines littorales non seulement leurs eaux contaminées mais aussi des sédiments surtout à l’état de matières en suspension, produits par l’érosion des sols, qui peuvent être particulièrement chargés en pesticides adsorbés. Les courants côtiers vont finir par amener ces contaminants dans les eaux récifales même si elles ne sont pas situées à proximité des zones estuariennes. Par ailleurs, l’érosion des sols dans des champs, qui parfois longent de très près le littoral, jouxtant les plages sur des côtes plates, peut lors de forts orages introduire directement ces eaux polluées dans les récifs frangeants par le jeu du ruissellement. Peu de données précises étaient cependant disponibles sur l’ensemble de l’île, permettant de conclure ou non à la présence d’une prolifération de cette espèce sur les récifs coralliens de Moorea. Afin d’effectuer un état des lieux, et de disposer d’informations d’aide à la décision dans l’optique d’une éventuelle campagne d’éradication, une campagne d’échantillonnage a été effectuée en novembre 2006, à l’aide d’une technique originale développée par le CRIOBE pour le dénombrement des Acanthaster planci sur les pentes externes de Moorea : le manta-tow en scaphandre autonome, ou scuba-tow. Cette technique permet de dénombrer, sur de longues distances, le nombre de cicatrices laissées lors de la consommation de coraux par les taramea.
