Au total 158 espèces appartenant à 42 familles/taxons ont été identifiées au cours de 299 pêches. L’ensemble des 110 959 larves était composé principalement de Pomacentridae (34,8 %), de leptocéphales (27,7 %) et de Ptereleotridae (23,7 %).\r\n\r\nLe suivi temporel, mené au Nord de Wallis, a permis de montrer qu’à l’échelle des quartiers de lune et des mois lunaires, la richesse et la composition spécifique étaient peu variables. En revanche, d’importantes variations de l’abondance ont été décelées sur ces échelles de temps. A l’échelle de l’année, aucune tendance n’a pu être extraite des séries temporelles. La plupart des espèces abondantes ont suivi un schéma annuel de colonisation. Ces résultats suggèrent l’absence d’une forte saisonnalité de la colonisation du lagon Nord de Wallis probablement liée à l’absence de saisonnalité de la reproduction.\r\n\r\nLe suivi spatial, mené au Nord, à l’Est et au Sud de Wallis a montré, pour la majorité des espèces étudiées (75 %), l’existence de corrélations positives entre les abondances des sites les plus rapprochés (Est et Sud distants de 8 km ou Nord et Est distants de 15 km). Ce résultat suggère que les événements de colonisation s’opèrent à une échelle spatiale de l’ordre de 8-15 km plutôt qu’à l’échelle de 20 km. Les variations spatiales de la colonisation ont été persistantes à plusieurs échelles temporelles (quartier de lune, mois lunaire et année). Les trois sites ont été colonisés par des assemblages de larves distincts. La sélection active d’un habitat par les larves de poissons ou l’influence des facteurs hydrodynamiques pourraient expliquer cette structuration.\r\n\r\nUne étude détaillée de la taille (LS) et de l’âge (DVP) à la colonisation de quatre espèces de poissons coralliens a montré que les pondeurs pélagiques présentaient des différences de LS et DVP entre sites et entre mois, jusqu’à 10 fois supérieures à celles des pondeurs benthiques. La flexibilité de la taille et de l’âge à la colonisation serait un avantage pour les larves issues des pondeurs pélagiques qui se déplacent potentiellement sur de plus grandes distances. L’arrivée des larves s’est déroulée à un âge plus jeune en été qu’en hiver. Ces différences étant significatives uniquement pour une espèce. Cela suggère que les variables environnementales ont une influence sur le développement des larves au cours de leur phase pélagique qui pourrait se répercuter sur la période de colonisation.\r\n\r\nLe processus de colonisation larvaire est un processus qui n’est pas indépendant des conditions environnementales. Globalement, les liens entre l’approvisionnement larvaire et les variables environnementales (la couverture nuageuse, les précipitations, la vitesse du vent, la direction du vent, la hauteur significative des vagues et la direction moyenne des vagues) ont été significatifs mais faibles. Ces liens apparaissent plus fort lorsque les variations d’abondances sont étudiées par espèce. Il est probable qu’au moment de coloniser, les larves réagissent spécifiquement avec leur environnement selon leurs caractéristiques phénotypiques et ontogéniques.\r\n\r\nLes liens entre les assemblages de larves colonisantes et les populations de juvéniles et d’adultes installées ont été très faibles ou nuls : les assemblages géographiquement les plus proches ne partagent pas plus d’espèces ou de familles que les assemblages plus éloignés. Les larves ont été collectées sur trois sites séparés d’environ 10 km et durant quatre périodes d’échantillonnage, en septembre et dé- cembre 2002, puis en mars et juin 2003. Les variations de la taille moyenne à la colonisation sont respectivement de 3 mm pour A. sexfasciatus, D. aruanus et A. triostegus et 10 mm pour P. barberinus. Pour les pondeurs benthiques, la colonisation est intervenue après 17 et 19 jours en moyenne – durée de vie larvaire – et principalement centrée dans un intervalle étroit (7 à 9 jours). Pour les pondeurs pélagiques, la colonisation intervient plus tardivement (après 35 et 42 jours en moyenne), dans un large intervalle (13 jours) et avec une plus grande variabilité. Ces estimations sont inférieures à celles d’autres zones du Pacifique mais présentent de plus grandes variabilités. La taille à la colonisation varie significativement entre les sites échantillonnés pour D. aruanus uniquement, et entre les échantillonnages pour A. sexfasciatus. Tandis que l’âge à la colonisation varie significativement entre les sites uniquement pour A. sexfasciatus, et entre les échantillonnages pour D. aruanus. Pour les poissons à ponte pélagique, la variabilité de la taille et de l’âge à la colonisation, au sein d’un site et d’un échantillonnage, a été jusqu’à dix fois plus importante que celle des poissons pondeurs benthiques. Pour autant il y a urgence, la majorité des territoires abritent des herbiers présentant des signes majeurs de dégradation.\r\n\r\nTout comme les trois premiers numéros, cette nouvelle Feuille marine a pour vocation de communiquer et de valoriser les actions menées sur les herbiers dans les différents territoires ultramarins et favoriser la mise en réseau des acteurs.
