Mayotte, collectivité départementale française, est l’île la plus orientale de cet archipel. Elle abrite un complexe récifo-lagonaire de 1500 km2, véritable réservoir de biodiversité. Ce complexe intègre des récifs frangeants et barrières parsemés de communautés à phanérogames marines. Cet écosystème, véritable pilier du récif par ses fonctions dans le maintien des équilibres biologiques et physiques du littoral, est soumis à de fortes pressions naturelles et anthropiques. L’objectif de cette étude était de caractériser, quantifier et spatialiser les communautés d’herbiers au sein du récif frangeant et barrière. Cette étude a permis de mettre en évidence une surface de 760 hectares d’herbiers à Mayotte. Ces zones d’herbiers présentent un taux de recouvrement faible et une morphologie discontinue. Cependant la biodiversité des phanérogames marines est remarquable. L’association de la télédétection, des Systèmes d’Information Géographique et des méthodes de quantification écologique a permis de rendre compte de l’état des lieux de cet écosystème sur Mayotte, site privilégié pour l’alimentation et la reproduction des tortues marines. Cette première étude met en évidence l’influence de la qualité de l’eau et des conditions hydrodynamiques sur l’écosystème des herbiers marins. La visualisation des résultats fait part de l’état d’avancement de l’urbanisation sur la côte Nord Est de la Grande Terre de Mayotte et de ses impacts sur cet écosystème fragile. Le Service du Patrimoine Naturel gère l’Inventaire National du Patrimoine Naturel (INPN) et toutes les bases de données associées. Ces informations peuvent être accessibles aux gestionnaires, par exemple, pour confectionner des mesures spécifiques de conservation de certains habitats ou espèces dans une zone géographique définit. Les données sur la diversité et la distribution sont collectées pour tous les groupes taxonomiques associés aux récifs coralliens, en collaboration étroite avec les experts taxonomiques et les comités locaux IFRECOR. L'information brute est ensuite traitée, vérifiée et intégrée, et les références taxonomiques listées par géographie sont générées. Enfin, le MNHN diffuse cette information via son site internet INPN (http://inpn.mnhn.fr). En ce qui concerne les coraux scléractiniaires, l’inventaire taxonomique de tous les récifs coralliens français est maintenant terminé.
