De ce fait, elle subit depuis quelques années des pressions anthropiques importantes. Les élus locaux, ayant pris conscience de la menace qui pèse sur leur commune, ont donc décidé de s’investir dans une politique respectueuse de l’environnement. Après avoir mis en place le Plan d’Aménagement Général et le Plan de Gestion de l’Espace Maritime, ils espèrent obtenir grâce à leurs efforts, l’écolabel environnemental décerné aux communes du littoral et aux ports de plaisance : le Pavillon Bleu d’Europe. L’objectif de cette étude fut de réaliser un document destiné à guider les élus dans leur démarche et à faire un état des lieux sur la situation actuelle. Il s’avère que l’île de Moorea présente de nombreux attraits touristiques, naturels et culturels, et que de véritables améliorations ont été constatées au niveau de la gestion environnementale. Néanmoins, si la commune se portait candidate au terme de cette année, de grosses lacunes concernant le domaine de l’assainissement ne lui permettrait pas d’obtenir cette labellisation. L'extraction terminée, généralement au plus près des besoins en matériaux, le site était abandonné. Ces anciennes zones d'extraction de matériaux coralliens sont toujours présentes avec les dégradations qu'elles continuent de provoquer dans le voisinage avec la remise en suspension des fines qui empêchent et gênent la recolonisation et la croissance des coraux. Sans compter l'aspect inesthétique de ces zones dans une île ou le tourisme est une activité essentielle. C'est ainsi que 18 \"chancres\" frangeants existent toujours sur les 73 kilomètres de rivages bordant le lagon.\r\nCommandée par IFRECOR-Polynésie en vue d'une réhabilitation-restauration de quelques-uns de ces sites, une étude plus précise de plans de restauration a été réalisée dans deux sites sélectionnés pour diverses raisons.
