Ils subissent fréquemment des périodes de blanchissement qui se traduisent par une perte de pigmentation du corail, lequel devient blanc. Ce signal, qui annonce une perte de biodiversité, est détecté par la télédétection. A l’Ile de la Réunion, de nombreuses études ont déjà été menées sur ses structures récifales jeunes, notamment à partir d’imagerie satellitaire. Seulement ces capteurs ont, d’une part, une résolution spatiale peu en adéquation avec la taille et l’hétérogénéité des entités à détecter et, d’autre part, ne sont pas réactifs.\r\nC'est pourquoi nous avons choisi de mettre en oeuvre une méthodologie pour cartographier le blanchissement corallien qui intègre des prises de vue effectuées d’ULM. Ce projet financé par la National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Oceanography Program, vise à caractériser et cartographier la totalité des récifs de la planète à partir d’un jeu de données et de méthodes homogènes (images satellitaires de type Landsat, à 30 mètres de résolution) suivant un schéma de classification géographiquement invariant et robuste. La même équipe traite l’ensemble des 1500 images collectées pour cet objectif, ce qui est un garant de l’homogénéité des produits. Cette équipe est répartie entre le centre de Nouméa de l’Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD), IMaRS/USF à Saint Petersburg en Floride, et le NASA Johnson Space Center a Houston au Texas. Il a été cofinancé par la DAF et par la dotation de Service Public du BRGM. Dans cette première phase, 30 plages sur un total de 173 ont été sélectionnées en fonction d’enjeux environnementaux et humains identifiés. Ces 30 plages ont été classées selon une numérotation mise en place pour ce projet.\r\nLes informations relatives à la morpho-sédimentologie (BRGM), l’écologie, l’ambiance paysagère ainsi que les infrastructures et les usages (DAF) ont été collectées sur le terrain et à partir de sources existantes (DAF, DE). Ces informations ont permis de réaliser les 30 fiches de synthèse de l’atlas (une fiche par plage). Elles se composent d’un commentaire synthétisant les principales informations pour chaque plage et d’une représentation cartographique.
