En 2004, la Direction de l’agriculture, de la forêt et de la pêche (DAF) a lancé un projet d’évaluation environnementale de 6 zones remarquables au sein du lagon de Mayotte (voir carte). Ces 6 zones ont été sélectionnées pour leur valeur écologique dans le cadre du Plan de Gestion du Lagon de Mayotte (PGLM, 2001). Ils couvrent au total 12 000 ha., ce qui représente environ 10% du lagon.\r\nLe groupe ARVAM-PARETO est spécialisé dans  la gestion des récifs coralliens et des zones côtières dans l’Océan Indien.
