Cela résulte d’une part de leur large et intense usage dans l’agriculture, plus particulièrement des insecticides, dans les zones tropicales. Le ruissellement et le cycle de l’eau contribuent de façon majeure à cette pollution. D’une part, les fleuves ou les rivières côtières introduisent dans les eaux marines littorales non seulement leurs eaux contaminées mais aussi des sédiments surtout à l’état de matières en suspension, produits par l’érosion des sols, qui peuvent être particulièrement chargés en pesticides adsorbés. Les courants côtiers vont finir par amener ces contaminants dans les eaux récifales même si elles ne sont pas situées à proximité des zones estuariennes. Par ailleurs, l’érosion des sols dans des champs, qui parfois longent de très près le littoral, jouxtant les plages sur des côtes plates, peut lors de forts orages introduire directement ces eaux polluées dans les récifs frangeants par le jeu du ruissellement.
