L’épave est posée presque droit sur sa quille. Quelques débris reposent sur les fonds environnants (panneaux de descentes, capot de ventilateur, mat...).\r\nDeux premières visites de cette épave ont pu être effectuées le 13 juillet, soit quatre jours après son immersion et le 13 août 2003. Le but principal de ces observations était d’observer les premiers stades de colonisation de l’épave par les organismes marins. Une contamination ubiquiste de divers organismes majeurs des réseaux trophiques récifaux a été mise en évidence même dans des biotopes reculés comme certains atolls des Tuamotu où les activités agricoles sont très réduites voire inexistantes. La présence d’insecticides organochlorés, en particulier du lindane est quasi permanente. Particulièrement préoccupante est la présence généralisée de chlordécone dans tous les types d’organismes analysés, notamment dans les poissons, qui constituent une part importante de la nourriture des populations locales. Par ailleurs, nos recherches montrent une contamination étendue des organismes des réseaux trophiques récifaux par les herbicides dérivés de l’acide trichloracétique, des dérivés des triazines et par le diuron, une urée substituée. Cette contamination est inquiétante pour la santé future des écosystèmes coralliens et leur fonctionnement, tout particulièrement pour les coraux hermatypiques fortement dépendants de leur symbiose avec les zooxanthelles, Dinoflagellés du genre Symbiodinium. Reef Check se veut un programme volontaire de surveillance de l’état de santé des récifs, s’appuyant sur une démarche scientifique rigoureuse mais adaptée aux capacités des intervenants. Qu’ils soient issus du milieu scientifique, des ONGs ou plus largement d’un public averti, quiconque peut participer à Reef Check.\r\nReef Check et Quiksilver, dans le cadre de l’opération « The Crossing », ont permis à des équipes de plongeurs/surfeurs d’explorer certains de ces récifs éloignés comme ce fut le cas pour l’île d’Europa en avril 2002. C’est à cette occasion que l’ARVAM entreprit de créer Reef Check Réunion. Le partenariat avec Quiksilver Foundation fut formalisé en 2003. Il a pour but la conduite d’un programme relatif à l’état de santé des récifs coralliens des spots de surf de la Réunion, en adéquation avec l’initiative internationale Reef Check du Programme des Nations Unies pour l’Environnement (PNUE).\r\nDepuis 2009, Reef Check Réunion est soutenu par la commune de Saint Paul qui a souhaité développé un réseau de suivi des récifs coralliens bordant les plages classées Pavillon Bleu.
