Les objectifs de cette étude sont donc les suivants : 
1. Réaliser un inventaire des principales espèces-cibles de la pêcherie artisanale locale observées dans chacun des sites, avec élaboration de listes d’espèces zonées ; 
2. Apprécier pour chacun des sites et pour l’ensemble du projet, la structuration de cette catégorie de poissons, selon plusieurs caractéristiques : \r\n- la diversité taxonomique (principales familles et espèces) ; \r\n- l’abondance de chaque famille et espèce de ces poissons, en terme de 
nombre d’individus et de biomasse ; \r\n- la structure trophique de ces communautés de poissons, en terme de nombre d’individus et de biomasse. 
3. Etablir, sur le site de N’Gouja, nouvellement identifié au sein du projet de classement en réserve naturelle, un inventaire de l’ensemble des espèces de poissons récifaux observées. Les récifs coralliens frangeants qui se développent autour de ces îlots rocheux n’ont, mises à part quelques données éparses, jamais fait l’objet d’un bilan spécifique de leur état de santé.\r\nLa présente étude, qui rentre dans le cadre du plan d’action IFRECOR 2006-2010 se propose donc de dresser un état des lieux de la vitalité corallienne des récifs ceinturant ces îlots du lagon de Mayotte. Seuls les îlots au sens géomorphologique du terme, c'est-à-dire détachés de la côte (ce qui exclut de l’étude les îlots de Sada, Mbouini et les quatres frères qui ne sont que des parties émergées sur le platier du récif frangeant de la Grande Terre) et émergés en permanence (ce qui exclut les îlots de sable blanc qui sont des portions ponctuellement émergeantes du récif barrière) sont étudiés dans ce travail.\r\nLa Direction de l’Agriculture et de la Forêt (DAF) a donc sollicité le bureau d’études « ESPACES » pour apprécier et cartographier l’état de vitalité des coraux sur ces récifs. Elles sont localisées dans le sud du Pacifique central et se situent à la frontière de deux provinces biogéographiques, la plaque Pacifique et la plaque Indo-Australienne. Ce travail constitue le premier inventaire exhaustif des poissons récifo-lagonaires de cet archipel. Plusieurs méthodes d’échantillon- nage complémentaires ont été utilisées en 1999 et 2000 ; des comptages visuels et des prélèvements d’individus à l’aide de roténone ou de fusils sous-marins. Ces techniques ont permis d’inventorier 639 espèces. Sept espèces supplémentaires ont été échantillonnées au stade post-larve à l’aide de filets de crête en 2002-2003 et deux autres avaient été répertoriées dans des collections de muséums. Au total, 648 espèces appartenant à 79 familles ont été recensées à Wallis. L’utilisation de méthodes complémentaires a été justifiée pour déterminer la diversité des poissons récifo-lagonaires. Sur les 648 espèces inventoriées, 42,9% l’ont été uniquement à l’aide de roténone et 29,5% uniquement par relevé visuel. Aucune méthode utilisée seule ne donne des estimations fiables de la diversité des poissons récifo-lagonaires. D’un point de vue biogéographique, la composition spécifique de Wallis est un mélange de faunes des provinces biogéographiques de la plaque Pacifique et de la plaque Indo-Australienne.
