Il est un produit du projet Millennium Coral Reef Mapping initié en 2001 à l’Institute for Marine Remote Sensing de University of South Florida (IMaRS/USF) aux Etats-Unis et qui se poursuit depuis 2004 à l’Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD) à Nouméa. Ce projet initialement financé par la National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Oceanography Program, vise à caractériser et à cartographier la totalité des récifs de la planète à partir d’un jeu de données et de méthodes homogènes (images satellitaires de type Landsat, à 30 mètres de résolution) suivant un schéma de classification géographiquement invariant. La même équipe traite les quelques 1900 images collectées pour cet objectif, ce qui est un garant de l’homogénéité des produits.
