La typologie Millenium (issue du Millenium Coral Reef Mapping project), faisant référence à la géomorphologie des récifs coralliens, nous a servi de modèle pour réaliser notre typologie : l’existence de blocs au niveau 4 d'EUNIS en fait une typologie « dynamique », capable d'évoluer avec l'acquisition de connaissances nouvelles. Cette typologie est le résultat des campagnes de cartographie des récifs coralliens et permet donc de faire le lien entre les habitats référencés dans la littérature, dont la description s'appuie généralement sur les biocénoses, et les habitats cartographiés, dont la description s'appuie plutôt sur des paramètres géomorphologiques.
